Britain's independent convenience retailers posted their strongest summer trading on record across May and June, according to convenience insight agency Talysis. The channel gained £30m in May, with June's heat fuelling a further climb.

Soft drinks set two all-time highs within a month, first at £105m over the Bank Holiday week ending 31 May, then £114m in the week ending 27 June. The uplift ran across every main subcategory: water, carbonates, energy, juice and smoothies.
Ice cream also broke its value record twice, hitting £14.8m in the week ending 31 May and £18.2m the following month, a 56% jump on the same week a year earlier, Talysis said.
"Hotter weather, whether a heatwave or simply above-average temperatures, delivers significant sales increases in the channel," said Talysis managing director Ed Roberts, who flagged the World Cup and Wimbledon as added tailwinds.
