Who we are

The Checkout is an editorial publication covering European consumer brands and eCommerce, operated under the Venice Founders Network. This page explains what data we collect when you visit thecheckout.eu and how we use it.

What we collect

We collect two types of information:

  • Analytics data — when you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics records page views, referrers, approximate location (country / city), device type, and a random visitor identifier. IP addresses are anonymised before storage.
  • Newsletter data — if you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address and the source page in our newsletter platform (Beehiiv) so we can send you the briefing.

We do not collect names, payment details, or any sensitive personal data on this site.

Cookies and tracking

We use Google Analytics 4 with Google Consent Mode v2. By default, no analytics or advertising cookies are stored. The first time you visit, you can choose to Accept or Reject analytics cookies.

  • Accept — Google Analytics stores cookies and records the visit.
  • Reject — no analytics cookies are written; Google may receive cookieless pings (which do not identify you) for aggregate measurement.

You can change your choice at any time by clearing the tc-cookie-consent key from your browser’s site data — the banner will reappear on the next visit. We do not run advertising or remarketing cookies.

Newsletter

Email addresses submitted through any subscribe form are sent to Beehiiv, our email service provider. Beehiiv stores your address, your subscription status, and basic engagement data (opens, clicks). You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email we send. See the Beehiiv privacy policy for details.

Legal basis (GDPR)

  • Analytics cookies — your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), given via the cookie banner.
  • Newsletter delivery — your consent (Article 6(1)(a)) when you submit your email, with a clear opt-out in every email.
  • Essential site operation — our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)) in serving the website and protecting it from abuse. No personal data is processed for this purpose beyond standard server logs that are retained briefly.

Your rights

Under GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@thecheckout.eu with “Privacy request” in the subject line. We’ll respond within 30 days.

Updates

We may update this policy if our tools or practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be flagged via the cookie banner so you can re-consent if needed.
